Melbourne may be sports-mad, but public facilities remain scarce and often unaffordable. Large-scale venues clash with the city’s compact urban form, leaving everyday access out of reach for many.
A new project reimagines an abandoned government building on Spring Street as a sports complex, plaza, and transit hub. By preserving heritage structures and adding a lightweight architectural layer, it creates a dialogue between old and new, openness and enclosure.
The development not only fills a gap in public sports infrastructure but also transforms the once-isolated government precinct into a civic landmark, highlighting sport’s deep entanglement with Australia’s political and social life.
